Omega 3 fats are a key family of polyunsaturated fats. There are three main types of Omega 3:

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) come mainly from fish, so they are sometimes called marine omega-3s.
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the most common omega-3 fatty acid in most Western diets, is found in vegetable oils and nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, leafy vegetables, and some animal fat, especially in grass-fed animals. The human body generally uses ALA for energy, and conversion into EPA and DHA is very limited.

Omega 3 fatty acids are an important part of cell membranes throughout the body, affecting hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to cell receptors that regulate genetic function.

Most of the fats that the human body needs can be made by the body itself, using other fats and raw materials. Omega 3 fatty acids, however, are essential fats, which means that the body is incapable of producing them itself and can only be gotten from food.

Foods high in Omega-3 include fish, vegetable oils, nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds, flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables. Wild caught fish will have more Omega 3 fats as they also get their Omega 3s from the food they eat – algae.

Possible Benefits of Omega 3

Recent research has shown that Omega 3 fats help prevent heart disease and stroke, while it may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis. It may also play protective roles in cancer, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions.

The strongest evidence available suggests that Omega 3 seem to have the most benefits for conditions like heart disease.

Hearts with dangerously irregular beats cause most of the 500,000+ deaths that occur each year in the US alone. These Omega 3 fatty acids seem to help steady the heart, preventing it from going into dangerous or possibly fatal erratic rhythms.

Omega 3 fats also lower blood pressure and heart rate, improve blood vessel function, and, at higher doses, lower triglycerides and may ease inflammation, which plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis.

Other evidence suggest benefits that may prevent the onset of psychotic disorders and help depression. Some also show the significance of DHA’s role in the visual and neurological development of babies.

EPA and DHA Concentration

Most omega 3 fish oil products have 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per 1000mg softgel. These are the most affordable.

Products with higher concentrations of EPA and DHA per softgel are also available, and may go up to 480mg EPA and 320mg DHA per capsule. They tend to be more expensive however.

Triglycerides vs Ethyl Esters

Most omega 3 fish oil products in the market are Ethyl Esters as they are cheaper to manufacture. They are the most commonly bought type of fish oil as a result.

It is generally agreed that Triglyceride based Omega 3s are more stable and more easily absorbed by the body. So, even if 2 products had same EPA/DHA levels, the triglyceride version probably be more effective. They are however, more costly to manufacture. As a result, Triglyceride based Omega 3 fish oil products, like those from Nordic Naturals and Madre Labs, tend to be more expensive as well.
