So many brands of omega 3 fish oils to choose from, where do we start?
To make things a little easier, here are some of the best omega 3 fish oil brands that we recommend, with the pros and cons of each.
Arguably the cream of the crop, Nordic Naturals is famous for its high quality fish oil products. It’s also famous for its price too.
The reason is threefold: Extremely high quality patented manufacturing and filtration processes that ensure pure, pollution-free fish oils. Triglyceride form fish oils that have been shown to be more easily absorbed and more effective than cheaper ethyl-ester based fish oils. And finally, their use of wild-caught, sustainably-sourced fishes from Norway and Peru.
Nordic Naturals is also the official Omega-3 brand of the American Pregnancy Association, which is high praise indeed.
Pros: High quality. Triglyceride based fish oils. Ultra pure. High potency, concentrated capsules available.
Cons: Expensive – easily double or triple other products
Madre Labs is the in-house brand for iHerb. Usually, in-house brands are only for cheap, low cost products (think fairprice, giant, etc), but it seems like they’ve gone the other way and decided to follow Costco’s footsteps, focusing on quality, value for money choices instead.
As a result, Madre Lab fish oil products also use the more easily absorbed Triglyceride based fish oils instead of the cheaper ethyl-ester based products. They also have unique pharmaceutical grade, ultra concentrated fish oils, which have easily 2-3x more EPA and DHA in each single capsule.
Best of all? These high quality products are still affordable.
Pros: High quality. Triglyceride based fish oils. High potency, concentrated capsules available. Great value for money.
Cons: Still not the cheapest
An old guard with extremely high manufacturing standards. Also the only company that uses recyclable glass bottles are non-leaching, non-porous, and odorless. These “old style” medicine bottles cost more, they provide unmatched protection against heat, light, and moisture.
Solgar has an extremely strong lineup of vegetarian products. They’re also unique to have products that are Kosher Certified by the KOF-K Kosher Supervision, and Halal Certified by the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA).
Pros: High quality. Probably the best quality packaging, to protect the supplements in storage. High quality, concentrated vegetarian Omega 3 products available
Cons: Pretty expensive.
Natural Factors has a unique party piece – they do pretty much everything in-house, which also includes having their own farmland to grow organic ingredients from and having their own softgel encapsulation facility.
Their RxOmega 3 line of fish oil products, famously endorsed by Dr Murray, is one of the most value for money products in the market. This is especially considering you get at least double the amount of omega 3 per softgel (triple, if you get the ‘Ultra Strength’ variant).
Pros: Concentrated, high quality, reasonably priced.
Cons: Ester Estyl based fish oil. Price could still be lower.
A no frills brand with a large range of good quality products at reasonable prices.
Their best contribution to the Omega 3 lineup would probably be their EPA-DHA balance range. Similar to the RxOmega 3 products from Natural Factors above, the EPA-DHA balance is a concentrated version of fish oil, with 400mg EPA / 200mg DHA per softgel, instead of the usual 180mg DHA / 120mg EPA.
They also have DHA or EPA focused versions, depending on what you’re looking for.
Pros: Concentrated, high quality, good value for money. One of the best brands for balanced value.
Cons: Ester Estyl based fish oil.
Now Foods – A behemoth in the supplement health food industry. They make anything and everything, and are also one of the most affordable brands when it come to omega 3 supplements.
If ‘cheap’ is all that you’re looking for, then the 500 capsule bottle giant is what you want, since it’s probably the cheapest per softgel. Want a higher quality, concentrated version? Now’s Ultra Omega fits the bill with 500mg EPA/250mg DHA per softgel.
Lots of other variants are available too, including krill oils, omega 3-6-9 formulas, and even mini-gels, for those who have trouble swallowing the standard sized pills.
Pros: Huge variety. Standard and concentrated versions. Probably the most affordable.
Cons: Ester Estyl based fish oil.
